Summer Internship - Zoning | Data Analyst | Spatial Integration

Summary
Contributed to regional spatial data integration and pipeline development at the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), supporting MassBuilds and the Massachusetts Zoning Atlas. Structured, cleaned, and standardized zoning and development datasets across 101 municipalities in Greater Boston to enable regional land-use analysis, development tracking, and planning decision support. The work helped improve accessibility and consistency of zoning and development data used by planners, policymakers, and researchers.

Approach
Zoning and development data across municipalities are often fragmented, inconsistently structured, and difficult to integrate, limiting regional-scale planning analysis. This fragmentation creates barriers for planners attempting to evaluate land-use patterns, housing development trends, and zoning constraints across jurisdictions.
Developed and refined spatial data processing workflows to standardize zoning and development datasets across municipalities. Using ArcGIS and structured data processing methods, municipal zoning attributes, development records, and spatial boundaries were cleaned, formatted, and integrated into centralized datasets supporting MassBuilds and the Massachusetts Zoning Atlas. The work involved spatial validation, attribute structuring, and ensuring consistency across multiple municipal data sources.

Results
Successfully structured and integrated zoning and development datasets across 101 municipalities, improving the usability and consistency of regional planning data. The standardized datasets enabled spatial analysis of zoning patterns, development activity, and land-use characteristics at regional scale. The work contributed to publicly accessible planning tools that support zoning analysis, housing development monitoring, and policy evaluation across Massachusetts.

Impacts
This work strengthened regional planning infrastructure by improving accessibility and reliability of zoning and development data used by planners, agencies, and Landowners.
The integrated datasets support initiatives such as the Massachusetts Zoning Atlas and MassBuilds, enabling data-driven land-use planning, housing policy analysis, and regional development decision-making. By improving spatial data infrastructure, the project helps planners evaluate zoning constraints, identify development opportunities, and support long-term regional planning efforts.
